City of Houston Public Service Recognition Week Scholarship Essay Contest
The City of Houston invites Houston area high school seniors at both public and private schools to participate in the annual Public Service Recognition Week Essay Contest. Seniors can earn up to $2,000 for college, gain a deeper understanding about local government and learn about the broad range of career options serving the residents of Houston. The application Deadline is March 28, the number of awards is 5, and the maximum awards amount is $2,000.
Public Service Recognition Week is observed in early May to celebrate the contributions of the thousands of people who work daily to make Houston a great place to live. Essay contest participants are asked to write 500 words about how they would make a difference as an employee of Houston municipal government. Mayor Sylvester Turner and City Council members will recognize the winners during a ceremony in early May. At that time, the following scholarships (sponsored by Cigna) will also be awarded:
First prize: $2,000
Second prize: $1,200
Third prize: $800
Honorable Mention: $500
Honorable Mention: $500
Eligibility:
The school with the most essays in the final round of judging will win $350, and the school of the first-place winner will also be awarded $350 to be used by the supervising teacher to enrich the classroom learning environment. Essays must be submitted online no later than March 30th.
